BABETTE’S FEAST (1987) – Babette wins lottery and cooks a feast. (movie is in Danish with English subtitles)

CROSSING DELANCY (1988) – A young Jewish woman her grandmother and “the pickle man” in New York City of the 1980s.

DINER (1982) – A group of friends gather at a diner to talk and plan about their future. Many actors got their start in this movie including Harrison Ford. (Rated R)

EAT, DRINK, MAN, WOMAN (1994) – Director Ang Lee portrayal of the old vs. the new as a young modern Taiwanese woman dines weekly with her traditional father, a famous chef.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (1991) – Fannie Flagg’s book adapted into a movie about women in the past and present; the ones in the past are running a cafe called “The Whistle Stop”.

LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE (COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE) (1992) – A young woman practically grows up in the kitchen and is able to transfer her emotions to the dishes she prepares.

MOONSTRUCK (1987) – An Italian-American family and their challenges including the appearance of a quirky baker in their widowed daughter’s life.

MYSTIC PIZZA (1988) – Portuguese sisters work in a pizza parlor in Mystic, Connecticut. Watch for a very young Julia Roberts in this.

SOUL FOOD (1997) – African-American family in Chicago and their weekly Sunday dinners with “Big Mama”.

SUPER SIZE ME (2004) – Morgan Spurlock’s expose on the fast food industry.

WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971 and 2005). Musical based on a children’s novel by Roald Dahl is about a boy who winds a golden ticket to tour a famous candy factory and the challenges that face him. The newer version, with Johnny Depp, is darker than the original with Gene Wilder.
